about commercials on DVDs, I googled it a bit and found this: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Alliance/ I'd rather download the movie illegaly then supporting this crap.
I don't know about the Nielson ratings but if they do the samples correctly (pick the right clusters, etc), they don't need more then ~ 5000 people. Doesn't matter if the population is 10000 or 300000000. [/smart-ass mode] ;)
I'm no statistician (even though it's on my business card), but a sample size of 5,000 in a country with over 300 million people seems rather small. But maybe that's just me.
While watching the episode, I take notes in Word. I usually have my screen split, with the show playing on one side, and Word on the other, so I can type and still watch the show. Oh yeah, I watch the episodes on my computer, not on my TV. And the way I do that isn't specifically illegal.
Taking notes generally takes a while because of the need to write down most of the action in each scene, as well as a lot of the key dialog. A general episode may take 1-2+ hours to watch and take notes.
Thanks for your info about the Nielson thing. I guess you kinda proved our point about accuracy. They really should take a sample of their questionnaire-filler-outers and see how many are being truthful--if they want another level of statistical analysis.
Justin: "I've seen a scene where somebody lost a finger & I transplanted it" - You should definitely add this on your business card! I'm really impressed!

I haven't finished the entire podcast yet, so maybe but you already found this, but the latest Neilsen ratings can be found at:

Several year ago i got a nielsen rating survey to fill out.
i only checked the shows i liked at the time (even if i watched them or not during the time period they asked).
i didn't check the shows that i was actually watching during the time period they asked. since some of the shows i watched were not my favorite.
actually i filled it out right before i had to send it in.
so that does not make this survey very reliable in my opinion.
and also they had a place for you to pick your favorite show and write some details on why you like the show.
i don't know why they sent it to me because at the time my father was in the entertainment business.
i was wondering how you take show notes? is it really involved? let me know.
Vicki,
