Hey this probably has nothing to do with this episode, 'cause I haven't listened yet; but I just watched "Stay" last week. I had been planning on watching it for about a year and I remember you talked about it in a podcast at some point. So what are your opinions on what the ending means and what parts of the movie are reality? I was really impressed with the way that none of the filmakers wanted to even hint at what the film was about during the commentary for the DVD and such. They said it would take away from the "magic" of the movie, so we'll have to figure it out ourselves.
I didn't really like the movie. I thought the ending was a slightly more sophisticated version of "it was all a dream". I also thought the "surreal" imagery wasn't that strong. It's the same set of problems I have with "Donnie Darko". For a better movie along the same lines I would recommend "Mullholland Drive".
I enjoyed Stay. I liked the tone and the story in general. Things do fall apart at the end with the "revelation."
SPOILER ALERT:
I think the end was pretty clear. Ryan Goslin's character was at the brink of death, and in his whacked-out state of mind, created a fantasy that involved the people he saw while dying. It's the kind of idea that would make an interesting short film. But streatching that idea into a feature, well, things get a bit thin.
I would love to see a movie like that, where in the end, the movie races towards this crazy revelation--but the protagonist hits a brick wall. He can't find any other explaination besides: maybe he's just crazy. Maybe he's dead. Maybe whatever. But the important part is the "maybe." Let audiences decided what's going on, because what they can imagine is always better than what they can show us.
Donnie Darko was great, for me, because it got really dark and kinda of scary, and quite apocalyptic, which movies like that rarely do. Usually it's clear that the craziness is all in their head (or some other lame reason). But in Darko, it was real.
I just read the plot summary on Darko just to refresh my memory, and it explains what happens in the end--WHO KNEW? I had no idea why Donnie stayed in bed and let himself get killed by the jet engine. Now I know. And it makes sense.
nice buns, LOL

About Fergie - does anyone know anybody who finds her attractive?? She's too skinny with a meth face - nasty! Someone should tell her that no one wants a piece of her, so she should stop singing about it...
You made very good points about the double standards thing though.
